Scale/Frame/Format

Using the object you have randomly selected, you must create an eye chart replacing the conventional series of letters with your object. This brief will allow you to explore scale and format, as the object must be legible and clearly identifiable from the distance of twenty feet and work across a scale range.

My object - A Skateboard

2 colours including stock.
Associated colours - black? brown/wood? coloured wheels/patterns/designs?
White on black? Mimicking chalk on pavement etc.
White ink pen on black card.
Vectors/Solids/Outlines? How will the object be represented?

Top 10... Rising Sun

Rising Sun from Jonathan Finch on Vimeo.

I've started a new composition for the next section using the Japanese rising sun and will then nest it inside another composition when completed. Compared to the earlier section of the title sequence, this part took a very short amount of time to do but I think it works very well and will create a smooth and seamless link into the main body of the title sequence.

Colour Blend and Opacity keyframes used to introduce red circle that appears as a result of the moving petals. I feel the animation is really starting to take shape now and Im looking forward to introducing the other drawn assets I've created and moving on with it as it has taken me a while to get some of the complex masking and movements at the start finalised.

Tutorial Feedback

Issues Raised :

- Make sure it doesn't become animation over design.
- Use Issuu to upload design sheets.
- Look at organisation of files in After Effects.
- Update blog to reflect current work levels and typographic considerations.
- Audio .. decide on a track ASAP.

Actions Required :

- Colour code elements by letter attachment.
- Put assets into folders.
- Canvas opinion of peers of what associations they have with Tokyo.

Opening Sequence Development

Screenshots to show next stage of the title sequence with the pink petals turning the 'O' red and it will eventually become the Japanese rising sun which will link into the next scene. I've also put in the newsprint background which really brings alive the delicate pink shades of the petals.

Top 10... Beginning of Title Sequence 3

Title Sequence 3 from Jonathan Finch on Vimeo.

I have now managed to make the petals flutter across the screen as if blown by a gust of wind and Im really happy with the effect created, although making several rotation and movement alterations to 45 different petals is fairly time consuming!
One other thing that Im a little concerned about is that it has taken 20 seconds of time up in the sequence but Im hoping when I change how the type appears at the start will save me some time later on.

Top 10... Background

Simple sheet of newsprint has been scanned to use as a background and in the following screenshots it shows it works really well. It gives a flat but slightly textured effect which grounds the animation and helps to pick out and show off colours used in the sequence without overpowering them.
