Final Crit: Feedback

Final Crit: Core Brief Presentation Boards

These are some rough layout boards ready for todays final crit. Below are the layouts for 3 of my 4 core briefs as the last one is yet to be finished. It should be useful to get some feedback on these before doing my final board designs which will be submitted next wednesday.

Brief 1: Colour Exhibition

Brief 2: Apparel Brand

Brief 3: Concept Restaurant

Photographing Completed Briefs Take 2

Had a little more luck with the photographing of my projects this time. A few of the images are shown below and I can now get on with starting to lay out some presentation boards ready for thursday's final crit.

Photographing Completed Briefs

So yesterday Naomi and I attempted to get some of our completed briefs photographed in preparation for our presentation boards - attempted being the operative word...

We started by photographing our collaborative project on restaurant branding but it didn't go well. Firstly one of the lights in the equipment borrowed from the photography department didn't work which made lighting the work tricky, then after trying and testing a few settings on the camera we thought we were on track. By the end of the day we had finished photographing the concept restaurant work but I didn't get onto shooting the colour exhibition and apparel brand projects which was disappointing. But then when it came to viewing the photos we had got later we realised they weren't going to be good enough... they were too dark and the grey background we had used actually looked quite greeny. Basically the afternoon turned out to be a massive headache and waste of time.

Me and Naomi have decided to re-shoot our project Monday and I'm going to make sure I get my other completed briefs done then as well.

(Below shows the images shot yesterday along with versions I edited on Photoshop. I turned them more black and white to get rid of the weird colours from the strange light but not having any colour in the photos made the look quite flat so I think it's important they are done again)

Apparel Brand : Finishing Touches

Just been adding some finishing touches to the MAST stuff before getting ready to photograph it. For the swing ticket I managed to pick up some blue thread which isn't a bad match with the blue spot colour used throughout. I also saw a slightly different way of threading it onto the ticket - as shown below. (via BERG Studio)

The 'rope-like' string has now been measured, cut and tied to form the handles of the carrier bag and I'm really pleased with how this looks. I think it's subtle touches and attention to detail such as this that makes a project stand out.

With some of the left over rope I have tried tying some sailing knots which I thought could be placed alongside some of the stationery when it's photographed. I've seen this kind of thing done by Anagrama where they add a little something extra which isn't part of the useable stationery but it helps communicate the feel of the brand identity when being photographed as a set.

Week In Review

Another week has flown by so I thought I'd take a minute just to look at what I've got done...

This week I've pretty much solely concentrated on my 2nd brief - the nautical apparel brand. This was because I wasn't happy with how the project was developing and it was starting to drag a bit. Therefore, I overhauled the application of the existing logotype into a design direction that I am much happier with. By Friday I managed to get all of the elements printed and produced which means the first two briefs are now almost complete.
The collaboration with Naomi has taken a back seat since Naomi was also struggling with one of her own briefs. Looking ahead to next week though it seems we are both ready to get back on with the project and I hope we can get it wrapped up by the end of the week.
The colour exhibition and nautical brand projects I am aiming to photograph this week so they can be arranged on boards for submission, ready to print by Friday.
Next I need to get cracking with my competition brief as there really isn't much time left in the module, especially if I end up needing to have printed resolutions for it.
Finally I will have to develop my initial ideas and design direction for the wÅven brief as the guy running the brief is back in the following week and I'll need to be ready to show him what I've done.

Oh and that little dissertation thing too...

Apparel Brand : Carrier Bag Production

Here's my carrier bag for the nautical apparel brand...

It's been printed on an A1 sheet of 'vinyl canvas' paper. It has a smooth printable side which has a slight sheen and then a textured canvas reverse. The material works really well for the premium carrier bag as it has a feel of real quality and holds its shape well once folded and stuck.

The carrier bag has been finished off with plain white 'rope-like' string handles which look great and help to reinforce the nautical theme of the brand. I'm also pleased with the actual design work that is on the bag as it looks fresh and modern and still appears consistent with the rest of the stationery and collateral. The carrier bag should be something really nice to photograph properly with an appropriate item of clothing as well as the swing ticket, receipt and receipt holder.
